With this year's theme 'Heritage at Risk' in mind, this mini-exhibition will present a series of newly researched and pieced-together stories drawn from historical records connected to Bailieborough and the Courthouse & Bridewell. These stories will explore the lived experiences of ordinary people in the locality in the 19th century when the Bridewell was a functioning gaol, offering visitors an opportunity to rediscover local lives that have largely been forgotten - examples of why it is important to keep researching and recording our local history, both built and cultural heritage.

Through a series of interpretive display panels installed within the Keeper’s Quarters, the exhibition will provide an accessible and engaging insight into crime, justice, and everyday survival in the past. The guide will be available at times for informal engagement with visitors, sharing the research process and the stories behind the exhibit.

This mini-exhibition will open on Saturday 15th August at 10am and will remain open to the public during the Bridewell’s regular opening hours throughout Heritage Week 2026.
