Join us for an exploration of the foundation, history and evolution of a selection of urban settlements in Limerick.
Our urban settlements are valuable economic, social and cultural assets. They provide us with a sense of place and belonging, and have a distinct and unique character, embodied in their social history, traditions, lay-out, and built heritage.
This guided workshop will be led by the Architectural Conservation Office, Limerick City and County Council, and will use documentary sources, to discover and document the origin and subsequent development and growth of selected urban settlements throughout Limerick.
Participants will work in groups to discuss various considerations in the evolution of the town from its foundation, including the hierarchy of streets, the role of open spaces within the town, and the local topography and geographical features. Using the documentary sources provided, participants will help to build a comprehensive picture of how the settlement has evolved over time.
Through roundtable discussions, participants will be invited to collaborate in the preparation of a statement of cultural significance for the place, and to explore how this significance is embodied at present.
