Exploring the Fens of Lough Sewdy with George Smith, Blackthorn Ecology

Join ecologist George Smith of Blackthorn Ecology for a guided exploration of the unique fen habitats surrounding Lough Sewdy.

Lough Sewdy is bordered by a rare and ecologically important type of wetland known as fen. This event offers an opportunity to discover what fens are, why they are so special, and how we can work to conserve and restore these valuable habitats.

The morning will begin with a short introduction at the Lough Sewdy, followed by a bus transfer to the northern side of the lough. Participants will then explore the fen habitats on foot, learning about their ecology, characteristic plant species and the challenges and opportunities for their conservation and restoration.

Following the field visit, we will return to the Lough Sewdy for tea, coffee and further discussion on wetlands and their importance.

Please note:

• Fens are wet environments, so suitable footwear such as wellies or waterproof boots is essential.
• Participants should wear clothing appropriate for outdoor conditions.
• The walk involves uneven ground, and access to the fen requires descending a steep slope.

This event is suitable for anyone with an interest in wetlands, biodiversity and nature restoration.
