Edgeworthstown in County Longford has a remarkable history dating back to a settlement by St Bécán in the 6th c. and today its history is linked to literary figures such as Maria Edgeworth, William Wordsworth, Oliver Goldsmith, Oscar Wilde, Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott. The Abbé Edgeworth who was closely connected with the French Royal Family, he administered the last rite to the king at his execution. All these stories will be combined into a wonderful video production and will be launched during Heritage Week. The video will be launched in the New Community Library on The Main Street. The library is built on the site of a former school where Oliver Goldsmith received his classical education. There will also be an exhibition of photographs and sketches depicting the town from the early 1800's.
This exhibition will be on display from the 19th August to the 25th August. Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit sites in the town connected with these historical figures and have the opportunity to view books, manuscripts, letters and artifacts connected to the story.
