Under the 1838 Poor Law Act, the country was divided into poor law unions, each with its own workhouse. In Louth there were three such unions: Ardee, Drogheda and Dundalk.
For Heritage Week 2026, Louth County Archives will hold a display that will feature a selection of the surviving poor law union archives in County Louth.
The County Archivist will be on hand to answer any questions people may have about this or other archive collections in its care, and will provide advice on any archives at risk.
We also acknowledge the support of The Heritage Council through the Heritage Stewardship Fund where a quantity of the poor law union archives is being conserved by a professional conservator.
All members of the public are welcome to attend this free event between 11.30am and 1.30pm on Tuesday 18th August. No booking necessary.
Street car parking is available on the Ardee Road.
