Enniscrone Castle Field Heritage Project
The final phase of structural conservation work on Enniscrone Castle is about to begin. The castle has stood overlooking Killala Bay for many centuries, long before the village of Enniscrone, as we know it, even existed. It is a fundamental part of our local heritage, and it continues to be of major historical significance to people locally, nationally and internationally.
Come and hear about the castle’s history, often violent, from local historian Paddy Tuffy, and of its association with the O’Dowda Clan who will gather in Enniscrone this coming October. Michael Breen will provide details of the conservation work carried out last year and the major works to be completed this year, aiming to provide for future public access. Archaeologist Angela Wallace will outline plans for geophysical surveys and preparing long term landscape management and access to our archaeological heritage within the Castle Field, including the castle and the megalithic tomb remains on the ridge.
All works to date have been funded through generous grants from The Heritage Council, and The National Monuments Service CMF scheme and with support from Sligo County Council Heritage Office and the Dept of Housing, Local Government & Heritage for which we are most grateful.
Come along to The Old Church, Main St., Enniscrone on Wednesday 20th August at 7.30pm to hear about your local history and heritage!
