Echoes from The Barrow

The Lived Experience Project is an oral history collection gathering the voices of those who grew up in Carlow during the 1950s and 1960s. Through a series of recorded interviews, older residents share firsthand memories of a county shaped by simpler means and stronger community ties — recollections of school days, family life, work, faith, and the rhythms of everyday survival in post-war Ireland.

Contributors recall childhoods spent playing in the streets and fields around Carlow, walking long distances to school, and the close-knit nature of neighbourhoods where everyone knew one another. Interviews touch on the local economy of the time — shops, trades, and farming — as well as social occasions like dances, fairs, and Sunday Mass, which anchored community life. Many speak candidly about hardship: large families in small homes, emigration of siblings and friends, and the limited opportunities available to young people at the time.

This will be presented as a podcast series, "Echoes From the Barrow," the project preserves these testimonies for future generations, offering an intimate, unfiltered window into a Carlow that has since changed dramatically. Supported by Carlow Older People's Council and funded by the Heritage Council, the initiative will be shared with the public through a series of listening events held across local libraries during Heritage Week.
