Echoes from North Mayo: An Online Exhibition of Forgotten Voices
Join St Cormac’s Heritage Society for a unique online exhibition celebrating the rich but often overlooked cultural heritage of North Mayo. This free event showcases the work of our current preservation project, which is digitising rare VHS tapes and audio cassettes gathered from local homes, capturing the songs, stories, music, and performances of now-forgotten artists from Moygownagh and surrounding parishes in North Mayo.
Under the direction of Dr Liam Alex Heffron (creator of BeoMayo.ie), our volunteers have worked to rescue these recordings—some nearly 50 years old—from the threat of deterioration. Many feature once-celebrated community members playing music, reciting poetry, telling stories, and performing amateur theatre, particularly from the culturally rich community of Moygownagh.
This online exhibition will feature curated clips from these newly digitised archives, giving the public an opportunity to rediscover the creative spirit of a region now facing rural decline. These recordings will be permanently hosted on by St Cormac's society and accessible to schools, researchers, and the wider public.
