On Sunday 23 August 2026 at 4:30pm, Pilgrimes Solace will present a programme of John Dowland Songs & Ayres, with special guest Malachy Robinson.
The performance, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Elizabethan lutenist and composer, will take place at St MacCullins Centre, Lusk K45 HF70, as part of National Heritage Week 2026 & Lusk Community Heritage Festival.
Founded in 2019, Pilgrimes Solace, Anastassia Rakitianskaia (voice) and Brian Payne (Lute), specialize in the lute songs and ayres of the 16th and 17th centuries. Through meticulous research and passionate performance, they bring the works of the Renaissance to life for contemporary listeners.
Malachy Robinson is a prize-winning double-bass graduate of London's Guildhall School of Music with a Masters degree in Historical Musicology from the University of London. As a continuo viol player, he has performed with Armoniosa, Trio Quattro, Camerata Kilkenny, the Earley Musicke Ensemble, St James Baroque, Chamber Choir Ireland and Sestina.
After the Lusk Norman Belfry's completion in the 15th century these songs may well have been heard in Ireland, with Dowland being renowned in his lifetime, sourcing Irish harpers for the European courts, and dedicating one of his compositions ‘To [his] loving Country-man Mr. John Forster the younger, Merchant of Dublin in Ireland’.
The programme will help prevent the heritage of early music being lost, and meets the theme of Heritage Week 2026 “Heritage at Risk”.
