Discover the History of Corofin Castle

As part of National Heritage Week 2026, the public are invited to attend a free lecture exploring the history and significance of Corofin Castle, Co. Galway. The event will take place in the new Corofin GAA clubhouse (H54 DK51) on Sunday, 23 August 2026, at 6.30 pm.

The lecture will be presented by Dr Enda O'Flaherty, archaeologist and heritage specialist with Lir Archaeology. The presentation will examine the origins, development and importance of Corofin's best-known medieval landmark, placing the castle within its wider historic landscape while highlighting its architectural, archaeological and cultural significance.

The evening will also present the results of recent building surveys and historical research undertaken as part of the preparation of a Conservation and Management Plan for Corofin Castle. This work has been funded through the Community Monuments Fund, administered by Galway County Council and the Department, to support the conservation of Ireland's archaeological heritage.

The project was initiated by the castle's owner, Padraig Conway, who secured funding to address the ongoing deterioration of this important medieval monument. The resulting Conservation and Management Plan will provide a long-term framework for the castle's protection, conservation and sustainable management.

The lecture offers a unique opportunity to learn about Corofin Castle's history, the conservation challenges facing medieval buildings, and the work underway to safeguard this important part of County Galway's heritage. Everyone with an interest in local history, archaeology or heritage is warmly invited to attend.
