Launching the Craggaunowen Wedge Tomb Project—an exciting initiative that will explore one of our fascinating prehistoric monuments and its landscape.

Developed by Craggaunowen Castle and Crannóg and Clare Community Archaeology, the project will investigate the wedge tomb through research, survey, photography, landscape analysis, and biodiversity. Combining these strands, we will deliver a deeper understanding of the monument, its landscape, and the people who built and used it more than 4,000 years ago.

Wedge tombs are a part of Ireland's prehistory and a remnant of our interaction with landscape. Wedge tombs are distinctive prehistoric monuments, from the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.

Part of the project's research will focus on natural habitats currently surrounding the tomb. The monument sits within in a serene and inviting setting, sheltered by a canopy of beech, holly, and whitethorn.

Communities around Craggaunowen are invited to take part by contributing to recording, discussion, and the sharing of their own connections with this unique place. By bringing together archaeology, landscape study, biodiversity, photography, and local knowledge, the Craggaunowen Wedge Tomb Project will create a richer understanding of both the monument and its wider setting.

In the longer term, the project aims to open the site to new audiences, improve access and interpretation, and enhance our knowledge and appreciation of wedge tombs in County Clare, ensuring that this remarkable monument and its landscape continue to contribute to our enjoyment of heritage and our natural heritage.
