Clontuskert Heritage Orchard Mapping Project - Our Living Heritage

Clontuskert Heritage Group are delighted to present apple tree heritage specialist Cillian Boyd who will come to Clontuskert to give a talk and presentation on old heritage apple trees on Sunday, August 16th at 5pm.

He focuses on local heritage orchard mapping to locate, save and propagate the oldest surviving samples of apple trees in Clontuskert in order to preserve those varieties for the future. We also invite the public to help locate old trees. He will also give a demo on bud grafting which is a summer technique to enable the creation of new apple trees from very old trees in order to preserve that particular lineage. We will have apple tasting and identification of varieties. An exhibition on the day will show the progress of our Apple grafts that we grafted in March using bench grafting methods.

We will also have a photography exhibition of the old apple trees and orchards that we have identified and an opportunity to look at a local gardener's diary from Victorian times. The ultimate aim is to conserve the surviving varieties that have grown in Clontuskert for generations and to build awareness and engagement around the importance of conserving these trees for the future.
