Citizen Science Snorkel Biodiversity Discovery Day

19 Lúnasa, 2:30in - 5:30in

  • Kilkeaveragh Pier, Portmagee Channel, Co. Kerry
  • Co. Ciarraí

Join Sea Synergy and Portmagee Tidy Towns for a unique underwater citizen science experience exploring the rich marine biodiversity of the Portmagee Channel Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

Following a short introduction to the project and basic survey techniques, participants will snorkel with experienced marine biologists to observe and record marine life in its natural habitat. We will focus on identifying the native European oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the diverse species that depend on this important ecosystem, while learning how citizen science can contribute to marine conservation.

The session will include an introduction to underwater biodiversity monitoring, the guided snorkel survey, and a short wrap-up where observations will be recorded and discussed. Participants will gain hands-on experience with real ecological monitoring techniques while discovering one of Ireland's most biodiverse coastal environments.

Suitable for confident swimmers with previous snorkelling experience. Snorkelling equipment can be provided if required.

This free event forms part of an ongoing Heritage Council-supported project investigating the biodiversity of the Portmagee Channel and encouraging community participation in protecting Ireland's marine heritage.

Previous experience snorkelling and a high level of water confidence are required to participate in this event. No age limit, everyone is welcome!
