Citizen Science Shoreline Biodiversity Discovery Day

Discover the fascinating wildlife of the Portmagee Channel Special Area of Conservation (SAC) during this guided shoreline citizen science event led by Sea Synergy.

Participants will explore the intertidal shoreline with marine biologists, learning how to identify common coastal plants and animals, including the native European oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the many species that rely on this protected habitat. Along the way, you'll be introduced to simple biodiversity monitoring techniques used by scientists and citizen science projects to record species and monitor the health of coastal ecosystems.

The event includes a guided seashore safari, practical species identification, biodiversity recording and discussion of the ecological importance of the Portmagee Channel. No previous experience is required—just curiosity and suitable footwear for exploring rocky shores.

This free family-friendly event is part of an ongoing Heritage Council-supported project and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Ireland's marine heritage while contributing to its future protection through citizen science.

Please wear Wellington boots or sturdy waterproof footwear, as well as weather-appropriate clothing. We also recommend bringing sun protection, drinking water and, if desired, a camera or binoculars.

Everyone is welcome to join; however, please note that this event involves walking over uneven, rocky and sometimes slippery intertidal shoreline. Unfortunately, the terrain is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

Children are very welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
