Not long after the Anglo-Norman invasion, the land around the old monastery of Díseart Diarmada was given to Walter de Riddlesford. He established a borough that grew in size and importance, becoming a walled town by the end of the 13th century.
Despite challenges such as the Black Death and attacks by Edward the Bruce, it was a thriving town and the site of King’s councils and parliaments. Today, there are parts of this medieval past that can still be seen, but much of the story is hidden.
Castledermot is still a busy town – with cars and lorries instead of carts and donkeys, and is seeing a new phase of development. On this walking tour, local archaeologist Dr. Sharon Greene will discuss the potential risks posed by development to the built and archaeological heritage and how development today can actually reveal much about our past.
Parking available at Teach Diarmada Community Centre, R14 YF61 (across the road from St James's church) and there is on-street parking available in other locations within a short walk. Please dress appropriately for the weather.
