Placenames are often the key that unlock a wealth of information about our waterways, landscape, history, traditions and events. Minor placenames are especially at risk. They do not appear on conventional maps and often survive only in local knowledge, passed down through generations by oral tradition. Waterways Ireland completed an in-house placename project on the Barrow Line as part of its first Heritage Plan.

The entries are now available on the national placename website; Meitheal Logainm. We plan to extend this work to the Barrow Navigation. At this event we will showcase the uploaded entries and offer guidance on how to record placenames and add descriptions. A project like this can often be the catalyst for a local oral history initiative, enabling local people to document and present their own cultural heritage. Come along to hear how you can play a part in preserving this important aspect of our cultural heritage.
