Launch of the book Master Hoare’s History of Knockcroghery written in 1938 for The Schools’ Collection. Brian Hoare was the twenty-six year old principal of Knockcroghery NS in 1937 when the Irish Folklore commission asked schools throughout the country to collect folklore from their local areas for the Schools’ Scheme. As well as submitting a volume of work collected by the pupils, Master Hoare took it upon himself to write the history of the parish in the Irish language. He also included thirteen photographs and a hand-drawn map. This book is a translation of his writing into English with some background information about what we now call The Schools’ Collection and about the man himself . The book contains the photographs and some beautiful illustrations by Ann-Marie Murray inspired by the text. A mixture of fact, fiction, folklore and fables, this publication should provide a valuable starting point for anyone ‘exploring our foundations’ . On the night there will a short talk about some of the places and themes mentioned in the publication and tea and refreshments will be served. The book can be purchased on the night.
