On Tuesday 18th Aug 2026 Discover the story of Irish-grown wool and its potential to shape a sustainable future for island communities at this special National Heritage Week event on Bere Island. Bringing together local farmers, craftspeople, researchers and members of the Irish Grown Wool Council, the day celebrates traditional skills while exploring new opportunities for one of Ireland's oldest natural resources.
The day consists of three evnets:
Visit and Children's Workshop
The programme begins with a morning visit to Bere Island sheep farmers, followed by a hands-on children's workshop from **2.00pm–3.30pm**, where participants will learn the basics of spinning, weaving, knitting and felting before creating their own felt brooch to take home.
"Show & Tell" session
From **4.00pm–5.30pm**, local makers and craftspeople are invited to a relaxed networking and "Show & Tell" session to exchange ideas, view products developed through the Rathlin Wool Project and discuss the potential for developing a Bere Island wool initiative.
The Rathlin Wool Story Talk
The evening concludes with **The Rathlin Wool Story** (**7.30pm–9.30pm**), a public presentation exploring the Future Island-Island Project and the Green Transition Ecosystem. Guest speakers include **Professor Alison Gault** (Belfast School of Art), **Dr Jayne Harkness**, researcher and former Manager of Ulster Wool, and **Christopher Weiniger**, General Manager of Donegal Yarns. Together they will share insights into the challenges, opportunities and future of Irish-grown wool.
Whether you're interested in heritage, crafts, sustainability, farming or community development, everyone is welcome to join this free event at the Bere Island Heritage & Cultural Centre.
This is a free community event and advance booking is recommended for the children's workshop as places are limited. The evening presentation is open to everyone. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.
The venue is accessible, and visitors of all ages are welcome. The event forms part of ongoing work to celebrate Bere Island's natural and cultural heritage while exploring how traditional skills and local resources can contribute to sustainable island communities and future economic opportunities.
