Exploring Ballygibbon House Built & Natural Heritage

Join us for a free guided walk exploring how Ballygibbon’s built and natural heritage has evolved since the 1695 forfeiture of the Muskerry estate.

The walk will be facilitated by renowned heritage specialist, ecologist and nature guide Ted Cook, accompanied by Michelle and Elaine of Ballygibbon House. Ted is well known for his deep knowledge of Irish trees, fungi and flora. Drawing on both historical research and ecological interpretation, the walk offers a unique opportunity to explore the enduring relationship between Ballygibbon’s built and natural environment.

The walk begins within the historic curtilage and grounds of Ballygibbon House before continuing through its former demesne to St Mary’s Church, Waterloo. Together we’ll explore the history of the house, its former demesne and surrounding townlands, discovering how successive generations have shaped the estate and it’s surroundings. Along the way, Ted will interpret the area’s native trees, ancient hedgerows, fungi and flora, revealing the close interdependence between historic landscape and biodiversity.

The walk will also highlight the ongoing stewardship of Ballygibbon House, where the conservation of built heritage is complimented by the preservation of native tree provenance, biodiversity enhancement and sensitive land management to create a sanctuary where nature can flourish.

Reflecting the National Heritage Week theme, ‘Heritage at Risk’, the walk will invite participants to consider the importance of safeguarding both our built and natural heritage for future generations.

Participants will also have the opportunity to help plant two traditional Irish heritage crab apple trees, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

The walk includes grass paths and uneven ground, so sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Families are very welcome, and children should be accompanied by an adult at all times. Assistance dogs are also welcome.

Attendees are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy after the walk if they wish.
