Askeaton Ballysteen Natural Heritage - The Fish of the River Deel

Askeaton Ballysteen Natural Heritage present an engaging walk along our River Deel. Join Liam O’Sullivan and members of Deel Angling group on a river walk as they outline the various fish of the River Deel, the transition from freshwater to brackish water between river and estuary and the species of fish that thrive and falter in our current climate.

Askeaton has long relied on the Deel Estuary and River for food, protection, trade and recreation. At this event for national heritage week we acknowledge the importance of the Deel for the historic development of the town, as well as the wildlife that the river and estuary support and the pressures currently facing it.

Askeaton Ballysteen Natural Heritage are a local community group in West Limerick creating action and awareness for natural heritage. In recent years The Deel has been feeling the pressures of modern society and ABNH were formed in response to pollution having a direct impact on the river and environs. Our annual Deel swim is now a thing of the past and no swim signs are still dotted along the river bank. ABNH continues to strive to raise awareness and for action against this pollution so that the future of our river will be clean. These changes need to be community lead.

The walk will last for one hour. We will be stopping in places to view the wildlife, discover local history and hear about older fishing traditions and current pressures to the fish population in the area.
