Arrows and Iron – Medieval Skills in Action

Step into the courtyard of King John’s Castle and experience the sights and sounds of medieval craftsmanship. As part of National Heritage Week 2026 and this year’s theme, “Heritage at Risk,” discover the specialist skills, knowledge and traditions passed down through generations.

At the heart of the courtyard, the blacksmith’s forge will roar into life with live demonstrations of this ancient craft. Watch sparks fly as iron is heated, hammered and shaped, offering an insight into the skill and precision required to create the tools, weapons and everyday objects of the medieval world.

Meet Guild Master Bowyer Jack Pinson, who will demonstrate the traditional craft of longbow making. Using hand tools and traditional techniques, Jack will show how a longbow is carefully shaped and crafted, highlighting the skill and knowledge behind this remarkable tradition.

From 11am–3pm, the Archers of Limerick will host the Great Brown Bear Archery Challenge, inviting adults and children to try their hand at traditional archery. Using beginner-friendly arrows, participants can take aim at a six-foot 3D brown bear target and a traditional archery target, offering a fun introduction to the skills of the medieval archer.

Blacksmithing, bow-making and traditional archery are specialist skills rooted in knowledge passed from one generation to the next. With many traditional crafts increasingly at risk of being lost, this event celebrates the people keeping these skills alive.
