Athenry Castle - Archery
Paul Burke has represented Ireland in archery. He will be giving demonstrations, talks as well as instructing our visitors in 'have a go' archery. This FREE and fun filled day at Athenry Castle is alway an extremely popular day.
The town and playgrounds are adjacent to the castle so it is the perfect day and place to enjoy and immerse in the town's amazing medieval history. The medieval longbow was fashioned from the lower branch of the yew tree, particularly the Italian yew. It was the main weapon of the Anglo-Norman military.
This event will showcase how powerful the weapon was and within the castle, the visitor can view the medieval shield which was the main protection from the arrows. View the arrow slits in the castle and on the grounds and see the vantage points of defender and attacker. Investigate the various defensive features of the castle and how the inhabitants lived, fought and traded.
There is ample parking in the area with plenty of restaurants and cafes. The visitor can stroll one of the best preserved medieval towns in Ireland and view its several monuments.
