An Introduction to the Famine in Galway

The Great Famine (1845–1852) transformed Ireland forever, leaving a profound impact on its people, landscape, and history. In this insightful talk, Galway Civic Trust guide and local historian Ian Brophy explores how one of the darkest chapters in Irish history affected Galway City and County.

Drawing on historical records, contemporary accounts, and local stories, Ian will examine the causes of the famine, the hardships endured by communities, and the social and economic changes that followed. The presentation will consider the experiences of those who remained, those who emigrated, and the lasting legacy the famine has left on Galway's towns, villages, and families.

This introductory talk offers an accessible overview of a defining period in Irish history while highlighting the importance of remembering and preserving the stories of those whose lives were forever changed. It provides valuable context for understanding the Galway we know today and the resilience of the communities that emerged from this devastating era.

This talk forms part of Galway Civic Trust: A Celebration of Heritage 2026, a full-day programme presented during National Heritage Week 2026.
