Aghaboe Grange Gardens Open Afternoons, Co. Laois

A rare opportunity to visit one of County Laois’s most beautiful private gardens!

Located next to the hugely historic Aghaboe Abbey in Co. Laois, Aghaboe Grange was built in 1864. Its present gardens are an inspiring mixture of formal and wild areas laid out in 2013 by Arthur Shackleton based on the original late 1800s design.

Lovingly cared for by owners, Roger and Susan White, the gardens have a strong structure of tree-lined walks using Dawn Redwoods, one of the most ancient of trees, Malus hupehensis, a Crab Apple from China, and Betula Fascination, a very striking form of the Silver Birch.

A spectacular double perennial border runs nearly the full length of this part of the property and is one of the longest in the country. Unusual specimen trees as well as native Oak and Scots Pine abound also.

A beautiful oval pond near the entrance to the house is set in a formal design of Yew hedging and Japanese Maples. Another large natural pond with an adjacent wildflower meadow helps sustain and support local native wildlife.
