A Tale of Two Bogs - Tyrrellspass

The village of Tyrrellspass guards the pass between two major bogs, each with a different tale to tell. Dr. Michael Stanley has agreed to deliver a lecture on Tore Bog on Sat 22nd Aug - "Dispatches From The Debris Fields" in which he tells the story of the rich archaeological treasures salvaged from Tore Bog while the BNM milling machines were stripping the surface for incineration in a local Power Station.

Tore Bog contrasts beautifully with the successful Restoration Works which have been completed on Cloncrow Bog. Unlike Toar Bog Cloncrow is relatively intact and has undergone major restoration works in recent years. A combination of drain blocking on the high bog and cell bunding on cutover areas has led to a dramatic change in stabalising the water table and increasing the surface cover with Sphagnum Mosses and other key Raised Bog Flora. Ground nesting birds include the Skylark, Meadow Pipit and Snipe while butterfly and moths species numbers are increasing dramatically. The scarce Large Heath Butterfly and the Spectacular Emperor Moth patrol and colonise this precious peatland habitat.
