A Priory in Pieces - Reconstructing Inistioge Priory cloister

18 Lúnasa, 7:30in - 9in

  • Inistioge

  • Co. Cill Chainnigh

Inistioge Priory was dissolved in 1540, and even though traces remain, it is hard to imagine what it looked like until then. Looking at fragments scattered in the graveyard and elsewhere in the village (and possible further afield), this talk will attempt a digital and 3D printed reconstruction of the cloister and try to answer some of the questions like: What lies hidden in plain sight? Who was responsible for its architecture? How does Inistioge Priory relate to other priories and abbeys of the area? What makes Inistioge Priory's cloister unique? What's up with the mermaid?
If the weather allows, an evening stroll after the talk will visit some of the fragments and reveal some of their secrets.

This talk aims at locals with an interest in their history and anyone with an interest in medieval architecture and art and their archaeology.

A small fee of €2 is required to cover room rent and traveling costs. Cash only.

Anne-Karoline Distel is a heritage enthusiast and citizen scientist from Germany, living in Kilkenny since 2016, whose curiosity for heritage and modern technology like photogrammetry and 3D printing combines perfectly for this topic.

Kilbride Coaches leaves Kilkenny at 6pm, arriving in Inistioge at 6:40. There is no return bus that day.
