1926: the Irish Free State and its census in context

The release of the information on the 1926 Census has been met with excitement across the county. This lecture will help to add to people's enjoyment and understanding of that information by offering some historical and genealogical context. The topics covered will include: Life in the Irish Free State in the mid-1920s, Census day 1926, the importance of the 1926 census, linking census information to other sources for family history (such as births and baptisms or property related sources such as Valuation Office records or Wills). The lecture will also discuss why the 1926 Census and its information is so important for Irish history and genealogy. Not least by discussing the fate of some of the records generated by previous censuses. Examining this broadly based list of topics will help family historians, both current and prospective, get the most from their research into the Census material and help them to begin to tell their family's story.
