The Vikings reached the Irish Sea at the end of the 8th century. This lecture will look at how the story progressed. Did they bring devastation and what form of society did they leave in their wake?

The Vikings arrive in the Irish Sea at the end of the 8th century. Irish annalists say that there was ‘a devastation of all the islands of Britain by the heathen’. This identifies the Vikings as pagan, in contrast to the communities raided, and indicates that the raids brought detestation, suggesting they were unexpected and different to raiding by local kings. This lecture will look at how the story progressed - did they bring devastation and what form of society did they leave in their wake?
