The Alchemy of Sound

26 August, 10am - 7am

  • Umha Aois
  • Dromid Community Centre
  • Co. Kerry

Umha Aois annual experimental archaeology symposium with demonstrations of casting and smelting experiments by archaeologists and sculptors, making Bronze and Iron Age horns with authentic methods.

The Umha Aois project has been on the forefront of experimental archaeology encouraging dialogue between art and archaeology, connecting practitioners, makers and researchers. Working in teams, archaeologists provide historic contexts, references and research challenges, while sculptors and makers offer to share their understanding of materials and processes. The group uses prehistoric methods and pit furnaces to smelt copper ore and melt bronze to reproduce Irish Bronze Age and Iron Age horns.
