A talk about the evolution of settlement patterns and vernacular architecture in County Roscommon. The talk will also focus on how future developments can reflect practices of the past.

Many of the rural settlement patterns in County Roscommon are linked to the history of the county and the land ownership which prevailed. Our present rural environment is reflective of the settlements and subsequent rebellions in the 16th Century, the emergence of large demesne estates, the aftermath of the Great Famine and land re-organisation schemes. The talk will discuss the changing patterns and how future development can reflect traditional settlement and building form.
