Join OPW guides Edel and Aoife as they give a tour of some of the gravestones found in the Friary focusing on those with beautiful & unusual imagery, thought provoking poetry and fascinating eulogies.
Ennis Friary has been a burial ground from 1306 until the late 1890’s. There are over 300 inscribed grave monuments, the oldest surviving one dating from 1629. Over the last three years, the Friary guides have recorded and mapped the graveyard. This project has revealed a variety of styles of lettering, tomb type and iconography. Through the centuries, the graveyard has been multidenominational and this is reflected in the various styles of inscription and iconography used.
