The Shannon: Sights Sounds Stories
The Irish Workhouse Centre & The Waters and Communities Office
Portumna Bridge Galway Side, Co. Galway – County
26 August, 2pm - 3pm
A weekend of iron smelting and forging! Local iron ore, charcoal and clay will be used to make iron in the area for the first time in nearly 250 years.
The iron smelting will be done, one the hand, by two groups of Irish people newly trained in smelting the previous week. On the other hand, 13 groups from all over Europe will build their own furnaces. Afterwards, this Irish iron will be forged by Irish blacksmiths. The event takes place in the park next to the bridge in Woodford, is open for all to see and promises to be a spectacular event. The East Galway Family History Society will have an exhibition on iron smelting in the heritage center.
