Dry Stone Wall Building Restoration

Dry Stone Wall Building Restoration

17 August, 2pm - 5pm

  • Mountcharles Heritage and Walking Group
  • Salthill, Mountcharles
  • Co. Donegal

A demonstration of dry stone wall building by local expert Patsy McInaw, who will also talk about the history of stone mining in the area, and some different methods of building a dry stone wall.

Mountcharles (Drumkeelan in particular) has a rich history of stone mining and quarrying. It was the only area in the country where stone was 'mined' as opposed to being quarried. The restoration of the 'Famine wall' at Salthill is an ongoing project on which Patsy McInaw has been involved for a few years, ably assisted by local volunteers.
