Seán Boner, President of the Donegal Historical Society, gives an illustrated talk on the Sinclair family’s exceptional photograph album of their holiday on Arranmore, in the summer of 1889.
In summer 1889, the Sinclair family stayed at the Glen Hotel in Arranmore, bringing with them their very own dry plate camera. They recorded their holiday but also everyday life on the island, the lifeboat, boats, the R.I.C. and Coastguards and captured how the island looked before the modern era.
The Sinclair album is a remarkable survival from the period where non-photographers took control & chose subjects of interest to them.
There is a great sense of empathy with the people of Arranmore.
