- Co. Roscommon
Ballintubber Castle stands as an excellent example of a community-led heritage initiative. The community are actively working to turn this dangerous ruined structure on the edge of their County Roscommon village into a valued community resource. They have moved from hosting annual archaeological summer schools at the castle, through commissioning a conservation management plan, and onto a concerted fundraising programme which sees them commence the first phase of capital works to stabilise and consolidate the castle in the summer of 2022.
The traditional skills training programme is being run in late July, coinciding with the beginning of works to the castle, and also with the end of the 2022 summer school. It aims to disseminate into the community the necessary skills and understanding to empower local people to drive the conservation works through the multi-phased process which lies ahead.
For Heritage Week, an online log of this course shall be compiled and available for reference by those interested in the conservation of ruined Medieval structures by local communities.
