"The Sweat House"

John Finnegan

  • Co. Tipperary

In nearby Doonane Woods on the Slieve Felim Way there is a stone structure known locally as the "The Sweat House". Circa 1990 during the reopening of the route up to the Mass Rock at 'Boolatin' above Doonane the Sweat house was revealed having been buried under dense foliage and trees for many years. At that point It was still in relatively good condition. However over time the site has become deteriorated due to weathering events and adjacent tree roots putting pressure on the base.

In 2020 KDA - Killoscully Development Association contacted Tipperary County Council Heritage office and Coilte with a potential project to restore the Sweat House. Both Tipperary CoCo and Coilte expressed great interest and offered support. An Archaeological Historian has been approached to produce a report and a restoration plan.

In 2021 KDA put an information panel at the site to educate passers-by and give reminder of the people who have gone before us. The Sweat House is listed as a visiting point on the Killoscully Heritage Walk and referenced on the village notice board where directions to the site can be found. The Sweat House is located about 1KM from the public car park at Doonane.

To build awareness around our Sweat House project we are planning to construct a Display Board at our community centre to be put on show at upcoming community events. A mixture of video photographs essays poetry and anecdotal writings.

Hopefully we can secure and protect it for future generations.
