'The Living Thread of Dún Gar' - An Online Heritage Mural
- Co. Roscommon
The Living Thread of Dún Gar is an online mural exploring Frenchpark’s rich historical legacy through one of its most enduring traditions: cattle, and the people who tended them.
The mural traces a symbolic procession through time—from the ancient Gaelic clans to the Barons de Freyne, from the Dominican friars of Cloonshanville to a young Douglas Hyde following Irish-speaking farmers—capturing the spirit of Frenchpark through a shared thread of land, labour, and continuity.
To launch the project, a digital unveiling will take place during Heritage Week through an interactive webpage. Visitors will be able to scroll through selected moments in local history, each connected by the presence of cattle as a symbol of constancy and connection. The project aims to honour Frenchpark’s unique past, spark curiosity in the present, and lay the foundation for a connected future.
This project is being led by the Frenchpark Historical Society, with thanks to Roscommon County Council and Frenchpark Tidy Towns for their early support and encouragement. The mural concept, historical research, and artwork are being developed by local professional artist Natalie Folan.
The interactive unveiling goes live on August 16th at frenchparkmural.ie
