The History of Little Samphire Island Lighthouse, Fenit, County Kerry

  • Co. Kerry

Little Samphire Island Lighthouse (or Fenit Lighthouse as it is known) stands about a half mile off the coast of Fenit Village in County Kerry. Built in the mid 1800’s the lighthouse has been in service for well over a century. It proudly takes its place among the bonfires, mariners’ beacons and light towers that have lit-up Ireland’s coast through the ages. The lighthouse is part of Ireland’s rich maritime history and is a majestic heritage landmark. It is true that Little Samphire Island Lighthouse captures a little of the hearts of all who visit. This compilation for National Heritage Week 2023 is primarily based on local oral history. To all who recount and share aspects of the history of Little Samphire Island Lighthouse – thanks for keeping the stories and history alive.
