Rent Collectors Office- Bath Estate- Carrickmacross

  • Co. Monaghan

This rent collector’s office for the Bath Estate (national monument mo031-034.), forms part of the St. Louis Secondary School complex which can be accessed through Distillery Lane. The complex contains many other protected structures and is of strong social and historical importance and interest as a key educational institution in the town of Carrrickmacross for the last 130 years. The building is an 11 bay single storey , double height school building dated 1859 from the plaque affixed over the front entrance porch. This building is a focal point as one enters the overall complex from Farney Street.

During the restoration of the windows and doors, students were exposed to conservation techniques and the importance of conserving original features such as the crown glass present in the windows. They also learned about the various types of windows and the different opening and locking mechanics represented. The locking system on the doors proved very interesting and the land agent boasted at the time of construction that he could 'hold up' in the office securely for 7 days. Students also learned about the agent himself and land ownership practices in Ireland at the time of construction of the building. It is intended to share this information with the wider public.

The conservation and restoration of sash windows, metal doors and windows and oriel window in Teach Essex Phase 2 is receiving funding from The Heritage Council in 2024 under the Heritage Stewardship Scheme.
