As a native Irish speaker from Inis Oírr, The Aran Islands, who specialises in sean-nós singing, I was able to give a unique perspective on one of Ireland’s cultural singing styles in a livestream.
I gave information about the background and history of the songs demonstrating how amhráin ar an sean-nós had their origins in solo unaccompanied singing. I discussed the regional variations of this melodic singing style found in the predominantly Gaeltacht regions of Connacht, Munster and Ulster. I highlighted the beauty of the lyrics, and the distinctive ornamentation found in this rich singing tradition of Ireland. During the livestream I answered questions that the audience had about this distinctive Irish singing style.
My aim was to promote Ireland’s intangible cultural heritage and demonstrate the rich singing culture of Ireland, raising awareness of amhránaíocht ar an sean-nós globally.
Sean-nós songs documented many aspects of the lives of Irish people and of Ireland’s heritage, expressing lyrically, the emotions, humour and history of our people. These songs can help express and process the emotions of the listener and I hope the beautiful sean-nós songs sung i nGaeilge will offer a respite during these difficult times.
