Spa National School & Kerry County Museum
- Co. Kerry
Hello! We are the pupils of 3rd class in Spa National School, County Kerry and we have the best view of any class in Ireland. We look out on Tralee Bay and the Slieve Mish Mountains every day and it’s an ever changing picture. We decided to do a local heritage project on Oyster fishing in Fenit as we can see the fleet of fishing boats from our classroom window in spring and late autumn as they work. In spring, our principal Master Linehan made contact with local couple Mary and Alan Browne from Fenit and we went on the most wonderful trip to Fenit. We were spoilt with beautiful sunshine and stories about the local area and our maritime heritage. Mary told us all about the process of oyster fishing and Alan showed us his boat - The Sundown - and how he selects oysters for the markets. We counted 9 to 11 boats on the day. Mary emphasized the importance of us, children and young people, to continue to fish and sustain the local area as it has been such a thriving industry in the past but it is in danger of dying out. We also met Catherine and Mike in the oyster processing factory and they were very informative and kind to us. We got beautiful photos with the blue skies as the backdrop. We hope you enjoy watching our heritage project about Oyster Fishing in Fenit - we are very proud of it!
