History of Windgap Grotto

Noreen Hayes
Windgap Tidy Towns

The Grotto is of significant historical and cultural value. Its management is part of a heritage led regeneration programme by Windgap Tidy Towns. It is located on Windgap Hill, a prominent landscape feature with views of Slievenamon and is the site of Chapel Rock. It dates to 1915 and contains unique mosaics, statues, viewing points, flora, fauna and a mass path. The Grotto forms part of our Village Loop Walk and is one of the hidden gems in the Windgap Area and was featured by the Heritage Council in its National Heritage Week 2020 supplement in the Irish Times.
