The County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society (CRHAS) in its current format was founded in 1982 with the aim of conserving Roscommon’s environmental heritage and promoting a greater awareness and interest in the various facets of history and archaeology of the county.
The original County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society was founded in 1905 and, while no other record of the developments of the 1905 Society has been found, its 1982 revival produced 14 Volumes of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society Journal between 1986 and 2019.
Roscommon County Library Service has worked with the CRHAS to make the 14 volumes of the Journal available online through Roscommon County Council’s website. All the journals have been scanned and over 200 individual articles and images have been extracted and are available to researchers, schools and to anyone interested in Roscommon’s rich local history. Tom Morton, M.A. has created an Index to the volumes and has permitted this to be made available also. Their generosity in sharing their work will ensure that the “intelligent interest in local history” in county Roscommon will continue.
The official launch of this digital resource will be part of National Heritage Week 2021 in Roscommon County Library.
