Changing Perceptions: Women of Art and Medicine at RCPI

  • Co. Dublin – Dublin City

Professional bodies like the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) have commissioned and collected portraits of notable members since the seventeenth century.

Our collection helps us tell the story of our profession and its personalities – including their class and gender. It is of little surprise that the paintings in the RCPI collection are predominantly of and by men.

Bringing the portraits of and by women to prominence is an important correction and demonstrates the changing role of women in our history, in the sphere of medicine and in artistic practice.

For Heritage Week we are offering a new perspective on RCPI's art collection, focusing on the changing role of women in the sphere of medicine and in artistic practice.

Our new webpages will go live on Monday 14 August 2023, sharing images and new research into our collections
