Bere Island Internment Camp Centenary

Bere Island Internment Camp Centenary

Helen Riddell
Bere Island Projects Group

In 1921, during the War of Independence an internment camp was opened on Bere Island, housing 284 men at its peak who included Sean Collins, brother of General Michael Collins, and Professor Alfred O'Rahilly, later president of UCC.

With funding from the Heritage Council's Community Grant Scheme, Bere Island Projects Group are currently producing a film to mark the centenary of the interment camp which will be available to view online this autumn. In the meantime, why not visit Bere Island during Heritage Week and walk around the sites associated with the internment camp with this online walking guide.
