Bere Island and its links to Argentina: An online discussion
Helen Riddell
Bere Island Projects Group
Like many communities, emigration has been a part of life for the community of Bere Island. However, what is unusual about emigration from Bere Island, is that as well as the traditional destinations of England and the USA, a significant number of islanders emigrated to Argentina. Our online discussion will include members of the Bere Island Diaspora in Argentina, who will recount their family stories, and how they've discovered their island links, and celebrated their Irish ancestry. We will also recount the story of Patricio Murphy (pictured here with Eamon de Valera ) whose father emigrated from Bere Island to Argentina. Patricio became a journalist and moved to London to work with the BBC, and took part in aviation history when he was one of the crew of an Argentine round the world flight attempt in 1924.
