
Music, Sketching & More: Heritage Week 2025 Workshops to Explore a New Hobby

National Heritage Week 2025 is just around the corner, and it is the perfect time to try a new hobby! Whether you are drawn to the rhythm of traditional Irish music or the craft of lace-making, this year’s workshops offer something for everyone.
The best part? These hands-on events are designed to connect us with Ireland’s rich cultural heritage, all while helping you discover a new passion.
1. Charcoal Sketching Evening at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin
In this workshop, you will explore the Cathedral’s breath-taking interiors through the art of charcoal sketching. Whether you are new to drawing or are a sketching maestro, an experienced artist will be on hand to offer guidance to help you make the most of the session.

All materials will be provided.

2. Kelp Ink Making, Cork
Learn the ancient technique of making ink and dyeing from seaweed. The workshop will begin with a seaweed forage, followed by a lesson on the methods to draw out the pigment. The inks will then be used on natural papers.

Please bring a cup, a pair of scissors or pocket knife and basket/net bag.

3. Making Connections Through Traditional Music and Dance, Kildare
Explore how music and dance have the power to build connections and strengthen bonds across all cultures. The event will be facilitated by local World Champion Irish dancer Katya Saultzs. Katya will also teach a few steps from some of Ireland's traditional dances.

4. Lace Beginnings: Learn the Art of Limerick Lace, Limerick
Join this beginner-friendly workshop and discover the art of Limerick lace. Led by teacher Eva Ryley, you will explore traditional techniques and start your own lace creation in a relaxed, creative setting.

5. Try the Pipes - Wexford Arts Centre, Wexford
Get hands-on experience with the Uilleann pipes in this workshop suitable for adults, teens or children age 8+. Hosted by accomplished Uilleann piper Mark Redmond, you will have the opportunity to try the pipes under the guidance of an expert piper.

6. Traditional Fishing Methods of Scattery Island, Clare
Explore centuries-old fishing techniques and equipment used by generations of Scattery Island Currach Fishermen. Try your hand at traditional net rigging, a practice that has not changed in over 200 years.

Display and demonstration by OPW ferry skipper and former Currach fisherman Thomas Blunnie.

7. Medieval Tile Workshop, Kilkenny
Craft your own medieval-style Jerpoint tile in this eco-friendly workshop with artist Clár Ní Mhortún. Adults and children are welcome to attend this 2025 Heritage Week workshop.
