
Heritage Open Doors: Unique Properties Opening Their Doors for National Heritage Week 2025

National Heritage Week’s Heritage Open Doors Initiative, which has been running in Cork city for the last 20 years, has been extended across Ireland this year for the very first time.
So, what does this mean for the general public? From August 16th to 24th, a unique opportunity arises to step inside historic buildings that are not usually open to the public or to sign up for their free guided tours. Here are a few exceptional properties, among many others, that will open their doors offering immersive experiences that bring Ireland’s heritage alive.
Free Admission Day at Charles Fort Military Fortress, Cork

Standing guard over Kinsale Harbour for more than 300 years, this star-shaped coastal artillery fort will welcome visitors with free admission on August 16th. You can go on a guided tour to uncover stories of military architecture, soldier life and siege warfare at the Charles Fort.

Huntington Castle: An Illustrated History, Carlow

Celebrate 400 years of Huntington Castle with Professor Kevin Whelan of Notre Dame University as he explores the estate's architecture, historical context and cultural relevance.

Gunpowdermill Walk and Talk with Tadhg O'Connor, Cork

Discover how gunpowder was made in the 19th Century on this 2.5 km walk on the banks of the River Lee. This is the largest industrial archaeological site in Ireland.
