Names and the landscape – the Westmeath Field Names Project 2018-2025
Project coordinator Dr Aengus Ó Fionnagáin will give an illustrated talk on the field names and placenames collected by the Westmeath Field Names Recording Project. The talk will discuss a number of placenames which describe aspects of the landscape, past and present. It will also provide an outline analysis of the almost 2000 local placenames which have been extracted from the Schools’ Folklore Collection (1937-8) as part of the project.
A more detailed assessment will be made of a selection of names collected in Ballymore, Boher, and Drumraney, with some further examples from Tubberclair, Tang, Finea and elsewhere, as well as commentary on some historical field names from Athlone.
Parking at the Uisneach Inn on the R390, limited parking opposite Killare Church. The event will take place in a private farmyard that has recently been conserved.
