Early Hedge Maintenance Demonstration on a Restored Hedge Bank
21 August, 10am - 4pm
- Leitrim Way marker post (Largandill)
- Largandill, Ballinaglera, Co Leitrim
- Co. Leitrim
A new hedge of indigenous genetic stock (native Irish trees) were planted on a restored hedge bank in Co Leitrim during National Tree Week 2024. Following on from this, early hedge maintenance is the next proactive step in caring for this young hedge.
Woodlands of Ireland will carry out hedge maintenance demonstration including grass cutting and removal to enable the individual native plants in the hedge have more of an advantage over the grass. During the demonstration, we will talk through the purpose of each individual species in the hedge as well as offer guidance on native tree hedge management. Early hedge maintenance offers numerous benefits including maintaining habitat connectivity, promoting biodiversity and ensuring hedges serve as effective windbreaks, barriers, or boundary markers.
This restored and replanted hedgerow bank marks a boundary with the Leitrim Way walking trail, which is a 56km walking route from Leitrim Village to Dowra and Manorhamilton. It is maintained with the support of Leitrim County Council, Leitrim Development Company, Mountain Meitheal Northwest and Waterways Ireland. Part of this walking route follows the legendary route of the The Beara-Breifne Way, Ireland’s longest walking trail. This was a fourteen-day march taken by Donal Cam, Chieftain of the O’Sullivan Beara clan, and his one thousand supporters in 1603, in the aftermath of the Battle of Kinsale.
Woodlands of Ireland is funded by the Heritage Council, the Forest Service (Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine) and National Parks and Wildlife Service.
